Army body composition calculator

The Army now screens body composition with a waist-to-height ratio. Your waist divided by your height must be less than 0.55.

Measured at the navel

Measure with a non-stretch tape, snug but not compressing the skin, at the spot your branch's instructions name, after a normal breath out. A cloth or fiberglass body tape works best; see body tapes on Amazon (paid link).

The Army standard

Army Directive 2026-13 replaced the height and weight screening table and the tape test with one measurement: the waist-to-height ratio. Divide your waist by your height, using the same unit for both. A soldier passes when the ratio is less than 0.55.

The directive also ended the exemption for high AFT scores. Every soldier is measured, whatever their fitness test result.

The directive does not say how measurements are rounded, so this calculator uses your exact numbers. A result very close to 0.55 could go either way on the official measurement.

Questions

Does the Army still use the height and weight chart?

No. Army Directive 2026-13 replaced the height-weight screening and the tape test with the waist-to-height ratio.

What waist size passes for my height?

Your waist must be less than 0.55 times your height. At 5 ft 10 in (70 inches), that means a waist under 38.5 inches.
